THE LATEST FROM LA CAMPANA ON APRIL 23
The book with the highest sales last year was L’avi de 100 anys que es va escapar per la finestra (The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out of the Window and Disappeared) by the Swedish author Jonas Jonasson. And this year it was Victus by Albert Sánchez Piñol. What do these two very different novels have in common? The answer is simple: their Catalan publisher, La Campana.
La Campana is the Asterix of publishing firms. It is a tiny company that fights and will continue to fight –and sometimes defeat– the giants in the publishing sector. According to the Nielsen index or the books with the highest sales on Sant Jordi’s Day (St George’s Day), they are the only firm that can compete with the giants. (…)
The publisher, described by Sánchez Piñol as “a Panzer in a skirt,” says that the reason why she publishes so few books is because “I want to see the book, read the original seven times, advertise it and talk to the bookstores…” (…)
Her approach is to “publish quality books that anyone can enjoy”

A PUBLISHER WITH A GOOD EYE
For the second year running, a book published by La Campana, a small publishing firm based in Barcelona, managed by Isabel Martí, topped the best-seller chart on Sant Jordi’s Day (St George’s Day). Last year (2012) it was L’avi de 100 anys que es va escapar per la finestra (The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared) and this year, it was the turn of another book published by the same firm, Victus by Albert Sánchez Piñol. The most surprising fact is that La Campana spends all its efforts publishing only five or six books a year and so its chances of being top of the list on two consecutive Sant Jordi’s Days are really small. There is no doubt that the merit lies in the authors, but the work of the publisher also has a lot to do with it. Fortunately, in Catalonia there are not only giants that publish in Spanish, but also artisan firms led by true literary enthusiasts.

GOOD JUDGMENT ALSO SELLS
For the second year running, a book published by La Campana has obtained the highest sales on Sant Jordi’s Day. Last year, it was L’avi de 100 anys que es va escapar per la finestra (The hundred-year-old man who climbed out of the window) and this year, it has been Victus by Sánchez Piñol. One success may be mere chance, but two are the result of good work and excellent judgement.
